So I’ve been all over the internet and I’ve been reading a lot of theories about Gendry’s role in the whole ASOIAF series.
Some thinks that he is not that important and just another bastard son of the King. Some thinks he’ll stay as a smith until the end, reforging Ice or Lightbringer. Some thinks he’ll turn into an EVIL person in the future books (this will punch us in the face as a reader). Some thinks he’ll have the ordinary countryside life in the end - like what his father wanted if he weren’t the king. Some thinks Gendry will become a skilled knight and make use of his Bull’s Head Helmet. Gendry’s character is becoming really popular even though he wasn’t on the latest book. He was last seen with the BwB.
Who is Gendry? many asks. I’ve read here on tumblr that he’s the possible legitimate son of Robert Baratheon and Cersie Lannister. I found other opinions/facts taken from the books/show to support this - found it here over on the internet. Opinions from other curious fans.
Gendry Legitimate son of King Robert Baratheon and Cesei Lannister.
1. in GoT, Eddard Stark was investigating about the death of Jon Arryn. He traced the last places he went to and people he last talked to. One of them is Gendry, working as a black smith. Some unknown person paid for his apprenticeship. Eddard Stark asked Gendry about what Jon Arryn asked him (Stannis Lannister was with Jon Arryn when he visited Gendry).
- Gendry told Eddard Stark that Jon Arryn, asked who his mother was. Gendry told him that he said that his mother has ‘yellow hair’ and that’s pretty much what he remembered and that she’s ‘dead’ and works in an alehouse.(well, Cersei owns a yellow hair).
- Eddard told Gendry to look at him. And he studied his face. He realized that he has the eyes and black hair of a Baratheon. Eddard is convinced that Gendry is the Bastard son of King Robert because he has the Baratheon features.
2. Also, for the continuation of the investigation of Jon Arryn’s death. Someone (sorry forgot the name) in the King’s council told Eddard that Jon Arryn borrowed a book and that he was reading it before his death. Eddard wanted to know what book that was and he learned that Jon Arryn was read a book called The Lineage and Histories of the Great Houses of the Seven Kingdoms.
- Eddard consults The Lineage book and sees that in every match between a Baratheon and a member of another house, the Baratheon black hair always dominates.
- Joffrey and his other siblings are are not children of Robert Baratheon because they all have ‘yellow hair’ ‘blonde hair’.
- resulting to Joffrey and the other two children being the offsprings of Cersei Lannister and Jaimie Lannister (incest). A fan also pointed out how Cersei dislikes Robert and does not want to have a child with him.
- in GoT, Robert mentioned to Eddard how strict Cesei in guarding her ‘cunt’.
3. In one Arya chapter in GoT, Arya overheard 2 people talking about killing her father, Eddard. Conversation goes like this
If he does not bestir himself soon, it may be too late,” the stout man in the steel cap said. “This is no longer a game for two players, if ever it was. Stannis Baratheon and Lysa Arryn have fled beyond my reach, and the whispers say they are gathering swords around them. The Knight of Flowers writes Highgarden, urging his lord father to send his sister to court. The girl is a maid of fourteen, sweet and beautiful and tractable, and Lord Renly and Ser Loras intend that Robert should bed her, wed her, and make a new queen. Littlefinger … the gods only know what game Littlefinger is playing. Yet Lord Stark’s the one who troubles my sleep. He has the bastard, he has the book, and soon enough he’ll have the truth.
This happened after Eddard Stark borrowed the book and after he visited Gendry the blacksmith. But, when Arya went to her father and report about what she had heard. He saw his father reading the ‘book’ and when she said about the bastard, she thought it was about Jon Snow (the bastard son of her father) but for some fans, the bastard being talked about by the two man is Gendry the ‘bastard’ son of Robert. And the book is the book about the Lineage of the Great Houses (about the strong Baratheon appearance).
Is it possible that Eddard Stark is close enough to know that Gendry is not Robert’s Bastard, but the true born child, a Baratheon?
-In the books, Cersei was said to have one child with Robert but she underwent abortion to eliminate the baby. Some fans believe that the abortion is fake instead the baby lived and was given to a whore (In GoT, Eddard also discovered that Jon Arryn visited a brothel before he died. He sent someone to investigate on every whorehouses).
- in the show, Cersei in a conversation with Catelyn. She told Catelyn that it is painful to lose a child and that he once lost his own son because of a fever.
Jon Arryn died. Eddard Stark died. Some fans believed that the truth about the true son of Robert are in them when they died.
Robert Baratheon never asked why Joffrey and his other son and daughter doesn’t look anything like him.
Same with Gendry, he never asked why the 2 Hands of the King came to visit him and why the Gold Cloaks want to kill him.
Some of Gendry’s personality are taken from Robert and some are the complete opposite of his father’s personality and more of Stannis’. Physical appearance more from Renly, Robert’s brother. The known Baratheon looks.
Robert used hammer as his war weapon. Gendry is a blacksmith that uses hammers for forging. Another connection for both of them.
Now, all Robert’s bastard are being hunted down, but only 3 known Bastards are alive. Edric, Mya and Gendry.
Joffrey and the other royal children aren’t Robert’s. And Gendry is the ‘eldest’ of all of his bastards.
Some fans believe that everything will be clear if Gendry will have his own POV in the future books. I pray and hope . But with GRRM, I dunno. :))
I wish GRRM (George R.R Martin) would turn GENDRY into a bad guy in the future books.
